What Happened to America?
Opportunity Knocking!
This is the most asked question today and the best opportunity you’ve ever had to share your faith!
We’ve never had such an overwhelming or compelling opportunity to move everyone, every day, closer to Jesus. Everyone’s asking the same question. What Happened to America? How did we become a nation rife with the divisiveness of discrimination, hatred, social justice, cancel culture, rioting, and rampant immorality?
The Simple Answer
No one argues when you explain that being close to God brings love, joy, and peace. No one! And then, no one can disagree when you connect the dots, i.e., the further away America gets from God, the further away America gets from being a loving, peaceful and happy nation . . . and the more that worry, anger, and violence will prevail. Very simply, this is what’s happened to America.
Setting the Stage
This is a powerful message for every audience because it obliterates the notion that anything else is causing the problem. Here’s the point: The root cause of what happening to America is not political, Democrat vs. Republican, Liberal vs. Conservative, or black vs. white. We’re the living testimony of a country that’s turned its back on God and we’re paying dearly for it!
How Far We Have Fallen
In 1960, 70% of our population were regular church attenders. We left the doors to our homes unlocked, our children could play outside after dark, we enjoyed civility regardless of our differences, friendships were enjoyed across the aisles in our halls of Government, and we were literally ‘One Nation Under God!’
But regular church attendance in America has dropped from 70% in 1960 to 20% in 2020 (pre-COVID). And over 30% of the regular church attendees before COVID, have not watched one sermon since COVID. Only 6% of Americans still hold a Biblical worldview. An astonishing 60,000 churches are about to close. By every statistic, America is a post-Christian nation. It should not be a surprise! We’re being led into bondage, just like the children of Israel when they turned their backs on God.
Make it Personal
Once you’ve made this point, make it personal! Point out the obvious: The further you’re away from God on a personal basis, the further you’re away from the peace, love, and joy that’s available to those living under God’s protection – and the more you’ll live in fear and despair (73% of Americans are living in fear). Everything in the universe is moving except God, the Rock of our Salvation who is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He’s our shelter in the time of storm and this is the biggest storm of our lifetimes.
You Can’t Lose!
This is a simple and profound answer to the question being asked by almost every person you’re with today. When you use it, you’ll even leave the hardest heart with the fresh thought that God is the answer to America’s problems and to their own problems . . . and that will move them closer to Jesus!

It’s By Design
“The goal of socialism is communism.”
Vladimir Lenin
“Communism is a religion that is inspired, directed, and motivated by the Devil himself, who has declared war against Almighty God.”
Billy Graham
“Because what America was built on, the bones of our civilization – God, grace, charity, liberty, individualism, self-governance, opportunity over guarantee, free will – are the counterpoints to everything communist.”
Judith Acosta
“You Americans are so gullible. No, you won’t accept communism outright, but we’ll keep feeding you small doses of socialism until you’ll finally wake up and find you already have communism. We won’t have to fight you. We’ll so weaken your economy until you’ll fall like overripe fruit into our hands.”
Nikita Khrushchev
“We knew this day would arrive. The ‘slippery slope’ of morality has now become a proverbial landslide or moral morass. What seemed to be a slow decline has now exponentially accelerated. The parading and applauding of all things unbiblical and immoral have reached their zenith on the shoulders of the autonomous self, where me, myself, and I are the arbiters of all things truthful and spiritual. Gone is any reference to transcendent authority.”
Kevin Shrum
“American faith, it turns out, is as fervent as ever; it’s just that what was once a religious belief has now been channeled into political belief. Political debates over what America is supposed to mean have taken on the character of theological disputations. This is what religion without religion looks like.”
Shadi Hamid
“Religion today is not transforming people, rather it is being transformed by the people. It is not raising the moral level of society, it is descending to society’s own level, and congratulating itself that it has scored a victory because society is smilingly accepting its surrender.”
A.W. Tozer 1963
“The thing that now goes by the name of Christianity embraces between its two poles every complexion and inconsistency. At one pole, it has the complexion of liberalism which denies every fundamental truth – as to the person of Christ, the authority and trustworthiness of the Scriptures, the atoning. Work of the Cross, the bodily resurrection of Christ, and so on. All of this is included in the Title of Christianity. At the other pole, we have hard, cruel, bigoted legalism, which can resort to physical force and the use of lethal weapons for its defense or propagation.”
T. Austin Sparks
“Over the last century, the church in America has suffered serious generational drift and decay. In every subsequent generation over the last century, the faith has become more fragmented, watered-down, superficial, and irrelevant. We have drifted from a vibrant faith rooted in the historic confessions, coherent theological convictions, and intelligent cultural engagement to a privatized faith that is indifferent to the past, theologically ignorant, and culturally irrelevant.
Ironically, the billions of dollars we’ve spent on youth ministers, Christian music, publishing, and media have produced a culture of young Christians who know next to nothing about their own faith except how they feel about it. Our young people have deep beliefs about the culture war but do not know why they should obey scripture, the essentials of theology, or the experience of spiritual discipline and community. Coming generations of Christians are going to be monumentally ignorant and unprepared for culture-wide pressures.”
Michael Spencer
“The majority of churches that exist today are organized spiritual business entities. They operate similar to corporate America. . . . The spirit driving most of these churches is self-preservation. They devise methods, practices, and policies necessary to maintain their survival.”
Tim Kurtz

Since they thought it foolish to acknowledge God, He abandoned them to their foolish thinking and let them do things that should never be done. Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy, murder, quarreling, deception, malicious behavior, and gossip. They are back stabbers, haters of God, insolent, proud and boastful. They invent new ways of sinning, and they disobey their parents . . . They know God’s Justice requires that those who do these things deserve to die, yet they do them anyway. Worse yet, they encourage others to do them too.
