Super Bowl Winners
What is the Super Bowl?
In football terms, it’s the final game between the two best teams in the NFL for a given year. Theoretically, it’s the final contest between the best two football programs, with the best coaches and training facilities, and the most gifted and well-coached players who have dedicated themselves with every ounce of their being to be in this final game.
How big is it?
The Super Bowl has gained the status of a national holiday, with the cheapest seats going for $1,000, attracting more than 100 million television viewers, consuming more food than on any other day of the year except Thanksgiving, captivated by television commercials costing $4.5 million for 30 seconds, while placing $20 million in legal bets and over $4 billion in illegal bets. For Americans, there is no bigger event than Super Bowl Sunday.
But it’s Sunday!
The 4th Commandment calls for us to remember the Sabbath and keep it Holy. We’re doing a really poor job of that! In the 1950’s, church attendance grew faster than our population growth, to 70% of our population. That number has now dropped to 20%. When 50% of our population chooses to focus on itself over spending time with God, there are consequences. It’s culture changing!
It’s not about football.
There’s nothing wrong with watching the Super Bowl. Most churchgoing Christians will be watching the Super Bowl this Sunday. It’s about choosing this day who you will serve. More than 80 million Americans will be watching the Super Bowl this Sunday that did not go to church, and most of those fans will be far more excited about a football game than they’ve ever been about God or attending church. They’ll guzzle more than 325 million gallons of beer and cause major property damage in the wake of the final score, regardless of which team wins or who they support. That’s not ‘Super’.
What’s wrong with this picture?
Again, while there’s nothing wrong with the Super Bowl, it’s a microcosm for what’s wrong with America. By every statistic available, we’ve become a Godless Society. As a country, we’ve chosen to worship other Gods . . . like football . . . rather than Almighty God, making chaos in America inescapable.
Moral authority can only come from an impartial Holy God who is pure and righteous . . . the God who created us with the choice to spend eternity with Him in Heaven. It’s impossible for any society to survive without agreed upon moral absolutes, and moral absolutes are replaced by man’s depravity when God is ignored. With less than 20% of our population still attending church on a regular basis, most Americans are ignoring God and all of us are suffering the consequences for their actions.
This is what a Godless society looks like! II Corinthians 4:4 tells us that Satan blinds the minds of unbelievers. With 80% of America now being unbelievers, things like late term abortions being seen as righteous (even after birth) and men deciding they are girls being allowed to walk into girl’s shower rooms, becomes commonplace.
Why are anger and absurdities and obscenities and dissentions ruling the culture and politics of our today. It’s called spiritual warfare and the soul of America is at stake. And we’re losing the battle because only 1% of all Christians view themselves as being on the front line moving everyone in their life closer to Jesus. For Christians, the only thing that will matter 100 years from now is how many people are in Heaven because of your influence.
Having said all that, comparing this level of competition to a football game is not comparable! This is the Super Bowl of Life and every one of us has been commanded to engage in this competition with the same dedication and fervor of the players we’ll watch on Super Bowl Sunday . . . pressing on to reach the end of the race and receive the Heavenly Prize for which God, through Christ, is calling us. Philippians 3:14
This is the Super Bowl of life, a billion times more important than what we’ll be watching on Super Bowl Sunday and a great segue for inserting God into Game-Day Conversations!
Regardless of who wins the game, you’ll be a SUPER BOWL WINNER when you let your light shine through everything you do and say today amidst the thrill of victory or the agony of defeat.
