Cultural Context:
Of the 37% of U.S. adults that claim they have had a born-again experience, only half hold core Evangelical beliefs or attend church regularly. There’s a wide gap between what people say they believe, what they really believe, and how they live their lives.
This is the “Lukewarm Church” that God says He’ll spew out of His mouth! Here’s why: Those who are cold bring condemnation on themselves, but those who are lukewarm bring condemnation on the Church. Instead of living lives that draw people to God, they live lives that push people away. Most Americans hold a negative view of Christianity because of “Christians” who are Biblically illiterate and misrepresent God with their words, actions, and attitudes.
The call to love God with your whole heart, mind, and soul is the true foundation of being born-again, and it’s in our nature to spend time with those we love! That’s why one of the strongest indicators of a born-again experience is faithful church attendance, spending time where God is. And when we truly love God, we tell people about Him at every opportunity.
Scriptures:
I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other! But since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth!
Revelation 3:15-16
Having a form of godliness but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
2 Timothy 3:5
It would be better to be thrown into the sea with a millstone hung around your neck than to cause one of these little ones to fall into sin.
Luke 17:2
