00:03
Hi everybody. Welcome back to ignite. I have some special friends with you. You might think that we’ve been friends for a lot of years.
00:12
This is how God works when he brings his children together that are like minded, that have the same love, have the same passion. I’m talking about Dr Scott and Pam Pyle. They’re precious. People are not living next to me.
00:27
They live on the other side. I’m on the west coast there. They’re one of the, some of the East Coast guys and but we met at Grand Canyon University. They were having a business couples conference and speaking to students, and boy guys, it was like for the first conversation on we were up, we kind of forgot about everybody else. We have so much fun. Yeah? So true. It’s amazing how that happens. But tell a little bit about your wife, rather than me doing what, give a little position so everybody knows who you are, where you’re, where you’re coming from, yeah? So we’re, we are a dynamic duo. She’s retired doctor now, author, we own, having a book signing coming up, book she just did Museum of the Bible. She just had a big launch at the museum. We’ll worry about dates, because I know what a date this is to go on for years, years, but you have a book signing coming up museum with the bio. That’s that’s awesome, yeah, and it’s awesome. It was amazing. Yeah, she’s doing a great job. And so, and then I own a financial services firm, and we own parts of other companies, and about nine years ago, when I turned 50, we decided that we were going to continue to grow to give and that God wanted us to keep these economic engines going so we can put it back into the kingdom of God, and so we really are, I mean, tag team.
01:50
Okay, talk before that leading up to that moment in your life. Can you give us a little snapshot of what that was? Was like, oh, wow, yeah. We both got married for all the wrong reasons. We weren’t saved. We didn’t know the Lord and
02:06
what I love to tell this story, because
02:10
we truly it was a rapid courtship, and he was the wild and crazy guy that I had never been around, and I was maybe a little bit of stability for him. I was just finishing my residency,
02:28
but I had no experience in faith growing up.
02:34
Had never been in a church, and he had a bad experience growing up
02:41
from religion and a little bit of what he saw, yeah, a discrepancy between what he heard in church and what he experienced in in his home and and elsewhere. And so he’d never really had a personal relationship with Christ and God ambushed me. Ambushed me and shocked us. I mean, in a accident, I was in the back of an ambulance on the way to the hospital, and Barry God allowed me to taste eternal death, and in this crisis moment of dying, I cried out in the name of Jesus Christ, please save me. And I, the next morning, came to in a hospital, a new creation, wow. And I was not so happy. She was hot digging,
03:31
because I had, at that point my life like Jesus with Santa Claus and tooth fairy. And all of a sudden, my husband, who I had married, um, as the wild and crazy guy who I still love deeply two years in. He’s now, you know, wanting to read the Bible and go to church, and he’s trying to witness to me, but I, I just was, was not our daughter’s daughters got saved. I mean, they came, they got everybody around me. I mean, it was like anybody I could tell exactly, except she didn’t want to have anything to do with I used to have to hide in her house to read the Bible so she wouldn’t find me reading it and getting mad. Oh, my goodness, yes. Now I gotta keep up. Can I say something right quick? There are a lot of people that are wild and crazy and and rejecting God and whatever, yes, and some gave save and some don’t. Some God speaking to all of us, yes. But
04:32
my view of it is that you, without even knowing you had a heart for God, there was fertile ground there. Yes, and he’ll speak to some people that same situation where they’re dying or whatever, and they’re still cursing God and going on and paying no attention, but you had this heart within you God gave you. He did, but God knew that, and he had plans for you, and he did. Yeah.
05:00
Because of that, he touched your heart and brought he orchestrated your lives. Obviously. I mean, it’s just, it’s a beautiful story. It takes us from lostness to to have the time of our lives. It’s great. And I can look back now, Barry, just what you said, and see my life now from this side. How is chasing and trying to find him? Because I was just had this hole inside of me. So I tried with money and fun and activities and all that the world offers, and just always left me hungry. And you can look now back and see that I, he was chasing me, and I was, I was searching for him, yeah, and then he arranged that meeting in the back of an ambulance. Well,
05:44
yeah, you’re what, I call it, an accident waiting to happen. I you know, we’ve had a lot of conversations about the nudge, how he nudged us to share our faith and and most of those are like, momentarily, I got the person right beside me, but some are longer term, yeah. And I have some chum lines. I call them. You know, when you go deep sea fish, you throw out show where fishes are, men, yeah, chum. And I’ve been throwing out chum to some of my best friends, yes, yes, with no return.
06:22
Yeah. Um, I’ve, I’ve given them my best shot, loving, caring when I came up without offending then I never offend anybody.
06:32
But their heart’s so hard,
06:35
their heart’s so hard, and they’re caught up in their things and their cars and their their parties, and if they want to go to Europe tomorrow, they can go to Europe tomorrow, right? And, and that’s their god, yeah. And as much as I’ve shared the gospel with them over some I have one it’s over 30 years, yes. And I’ve told you so many times I don’t want to go to heaven without you. So help me. I do not want to go to him without you. I tell a lot of people that, but him emphatically and well, and I often say to Christians, I have car guy friends that are living better lives than most of you.
07:12
They’re giving. They were carry car guys are very giving people, just as a community, they’re just giving generous kind people. It’s a wonderful community, kind of that God Family country kind of crowd, right? Yes, they got that. They got that. They’re solid, but that, but, but that’s their God, and they can’t see beyond that. They think that they’ll have to give up something and be churchy, and like a monk, they don’t understand the fear. But anyway, I don’t want to blame that so hard on the survey. The point is, you, God was preparing you, and you had a heart forgot what you didn’t know, but what God was about to do for you. You were hungry for it. Yes, amen, absolutely and truthfully. What I want to add Barry is he had praying grandparents, and so the one thing in his life from a young child, he he heard the word, and in this unconscious state, you know, I I’m thinking he’s potentially Dying, he’s unconscious, but he remembered the Scripture, every knee will bow, every tongue confess. Every knee will bow, every tongue confess. And so the prayers of His grandparents from 30 years ago, just like their friend, the seeds you’ve planted, you don’t know when they will be ripened and watered by our Lord, because he desires that none shall perish. And it may be
08:51
when you have the world and worldly things, you don’t recognize your need for God, but when you come to an illness, and awareness of your own mortality,
09:05
then you begin to think about the things of God and the seeds that are planted. And so I believe, truthfully, all those seeds will not come back without answered prayer because Eric McGuire committing to prayer
09:26
is is powerful. The Word of God shall not return void, right? Never, never. You know, Ben Carson was speaking not about he just loved a Christian loves the Lord. But he was speaking something about how the brain works. I was listening to a few years ago, and it really spoke to me. He said, you know your brain ever forgets anything?
09:43
It remembers everything, the good and the bad, the preaching and the non preaching. And he said, when we make decisions, we tend to make our decisions based on the sum total of what we’ve heard.
09:56
So we have a lot of people around us who’ve really never heard I mean.
10:00
They’ve heard Jesus and whatever, and they may even believe that Jesus Son of God, but they don’t understand the gospel and how much He loves them. They don’t
10:08
know that
10:10
we may be the first person in that process, and it’s not returning, it’s just void. They didn’t hear me. They can’t get away from it. Here’s the point I want to make. They can’t escape it, even if they get mad at you. And I never get anybody mad at me, because I’m just telling God loves they don’t get mad when they when you tell them God loves them. But no matter what, if nothing else, they leave me hearing my words, God loves you, and he has a plan for you, yes, and if only that seed, I know there’s, there’s no conversation we have with people that doesn’t bring fruit. It may be years later,
10:51
I just had the privilege of working
10:55
it’s a team sport.
10:57
Be a part of that every moment, because everybody around us is in a journey. They’re on a journey, and we get to move them just a little bit closer every day. Move everybody, right? I know you, if we jump in, everybody jumped in closer to Jesus, yeah, if we jump in and participate in that journey with others, just a beaut, I mean. And the overwhelming to see someone, a friend of ours, for almost 30, I mean, almost 30 years, who’s been in church and been around it and been around us, and we’ve been praying and talking to come to that point of the end of himself,
11:34
and then crying out and starting to really ask questions and to share the gospel and pray with him. I i became so physically incapacitated with emotion that I literally called another friend to make sure we walked through it, because I was overwhelmed with emotion of this journey that I had the privilege to be on Wow,
12:00
my pastor here in Arizona, Luke Barnett, fabulous pastor. I’ve I have, uh, Jack Gibbs in California. I go back and forth to two great pastors. And Luke preached, uh, two Sundays ago, broken or busted.
12:17
And he said, When your butt is like, I do something wrong. Busted, and
12:24
then when you’re broken, you’re not broken, you’re what you just described. And anyways, to share our faith with people, yeah, we’re broken. We’re broken for the for the lives around us that are that are lost. We ache for them, yes. That’s our heart’s desire for them. That’s what life is all about. That’s the only thing we have to do any eternal significance, is ministering to them yes and yeah and hurt for them. And do it out of love, not out of condemnation or Amen superiority. In other words, just yeah, no matter in fact, it’s almost more fun than they don’t look like us,
13:05
perception of us that are different and we love on them. Yeah, they don’t know what to do instead of Sarah, and instead of sharing judgment, share joy. Yeah, you know, instead of hopelessness, share the hope. And because they’re looking to us. And I just want to say
13:24
it can feel intimidating at first sharing your faith, because you, you know, I know, when I started, I was like, I don’t want to do it wrong and perhaps mess this up for someone. Okay, time out.
13:42
Explain. I wanted to go into more detail. This is important, because a lot of people now where you were then. So what kept you from wanting to share your faith?
13:55
Well, I didn’t. I continued to share my faith, but I wasn’t very successful in terms of
14:05
outcome. You know, I was sharing my faith with a very kind of strict path of
14:12
the Romans road, and it’s a great way to share your faith. But I had
14:19
not been open to the Holy Spirit in terms of what to say, when to say it. And
14:30
sometimes
14:33
Jesus saves and I wouldn’t have to say, say anything but, but the gift of like God really teaching me and stripping me of all the things that
14:48
I needed to be taken from me and my identity fully in Christ, because she’s a doctor, you know? It’s a checklist, right? So she’s just doing it mechanically. I literally had a list of who I shared.
15:00
And
15:02
intellectual exercise. What’d you call it the Gestapo gossip? She used to want to slam them across the goal line. I called it the Gestapo gospel because everybody heard it say, but God really revealed to me, in a time suffering, how
15:20
it was not me that was saving them. It is Christ that is saving them. Yeah. And for those that are out there that are are like thinking, you have to say the right words, trust the Lord. Just say something, even if it’s, can I pray for you and listen to the Holy Spirit, and he’ll give you the words, and he’ll begin to show you the fruit that’s for us. That is That’s amazing. That is it. That’s where you have intimacy with God. It’s not a sales pitch, folks. It’s not mark 1311. Actually says, don’t prepare. We’ve been told to memorize and get all this stuff. He says, don’t prepare. Even better, Luke, 12 four says, The Holy Spirit, get this, folks, the whole you just said, I’m just giving you a scripture to back it up, the Holy Spirit will give you the word to say when you need them. Yes. And so it’s not about you can’t possibly prepare what people are going to say to you. You can’t. You just can’t. And so you love on people. Here’s how it works, right quick you love on people. They sense your love is real. The Holy Spirit is there before you, affirming Your love is real, they open up. I mean, oftentimes, within five minutes, a complete stranger will open up and tell you their deepest needs. It’s amazing how fast that operates. And then you don’t have to say, Well, we’ll see what scripture
16:47
you just love on them. And the Holy Spirit, supernaturally gives you the words. The Ecstasy brings scriptures to you to your remembrance that you’ve forgotten. And it’s a spiritual experience, so when you stop trying to control it, that’s where the fear is. Satan stops us from sharing our faith out of fear. That’s his main weapon against us, is fear. If he keeps you in fear, you don’t have faith. And without faith, it’s impossible, please God. So he’s, he’s, he’s, he has a church isolated there’s about 10% of us, about three, 30 million people in the United States that are Bible, believing, Jesus, following believers, but almost all are living in fear. The studies say that they’re coming in living in fear. So fear of not being able to share is fear of not saying the right words. That’s Satan.
17:39
He’s trying to convince you you can’t, and you can’t do it, and you can’t, that’s why you don’t have to. You just love so amazing experience, folks. I gotta tell you, the first time you experienced the the the whole thing of the Holy Spirit speaking through you, and also you’re speaking scriptures you haven’t been thought of for years, and you’re courting them verbatim. You know what I’m talking about? Absolutely, that’s exciting. And
18:10
using you is, it’s intimacy with God. And Isaiah 4310, is, here’s why he appointed as my witness, so that you believe. He didn’t say, So you believe more. He says, This is how you believe and know and understand that I am God. Because there’s no other experience in our human experience that allows us to to understand and have the flow of the Holy Spirit manifesting, coming through us and speaking through us and changing lives in front of us. There’s nothing like it in the world
18:41
you’re experiencing we’re trying to share with you. If you haven’t done it yet, you’re you’re missing out on what it means to be a Christian. You really are. This is what being a Christian is all about. What these folks are saying, just for the generous of their hearts, and God has led it along this path and and quite fair. I just say one more quick like I want to hear you speak, but I say it’s like shooting baskets. Don’t expect to be a great faith sharer the first time you do it, don’t you can’t be great at anything the first time you do it, unless you totally rely on the Holy Spirit. That happens pretty quickly. But I like it just shooting baskets. You know, you could be a lousy
19:17
not a basketball player, uncoordinated, but if you work out long enough, pretty soon you start switching them. Yeah, but you know what? From that very first experience, you’re in the game, and as bad as we were, we first started back in 1973 we made all kinds of mistakes, but there was always fruit. We always left an impact. We even in spite of our naivety and trying to do it our own strength. There was there was there was fruit that was being planted. We could see that in people’s lives. So it’s you’re talking about it with others like wonderful. Let me just say your experience. So I want to go back to you. I’m talking too much. You’re my guest. No,
19:55
you’re living it. You’re living your life. Is an expression of what we often talk about here.
20:00
In but living with others and talking about sharing the gospel, it encourages you to go share it more. And then when you share it and you realize, you know, I know I’m ill equipped. I know walking up, I’m ill equipped, but just the opening of the mouth with the heart of sharing Jesus Christ, the supernatural takes place, and then you walk away with your faith so much bigger, oh, so blown away by what God just did. Because you know, when you walk up, you don’t even know what to say, you don’t know what to do. Is this person going to slap me, scream at me, yell at me, the Uber driver is going to think I’m a freak, and then all sudden they start warming up, and the Uber driver is crying when we get out at the airport, hugging us and showing pictures of the family, and we’re worshiping the Lord. Saved or not saved, it is amazing when you do that. Amazing. And I just want to say for us, like in our entire married life,
21:03
our evenings, when we come home at the end of the day, the most exciting days are like when we actually see Christ, walk someone across the line, and we get to be there. It’s like to be there. There’s nothing in our worldly experience. That surpasses and I also want to say everyone has a personal testimony, and oftentimes our personal testimony is the entry door of explaining who we were
21:41
and
21:43
who we became, especially with only because of Christ and not because of anything we deserve, or still deserve, and people want to know it’s just grace, yeah, And God loves them, and
22:00
that speaks to all peoples, no matter where they come from, is they want to be loved, yeah, especially when they see you as they think you’ve this hoity, you know, this Christian, and you everything’s great, and y’all just this life. And then you start asking them about their life, and you start talking with them about and then they realize you’re a broken person, that without Jesus is just a total mess, a total wreck without Jesus, and it’s Jesus. And so if anything you see good, or if anything you see calm or peace or love or joy, it’s Jesus, because we know who we were before him, and she can’t deny what God’s done in my life, and I cannot deny what God’s done in her life, and that is so affirming to each other in marriage. But she’s right. We high five at the end of the day when God gives us the pleasure of not just sharing the gospel, then someone receiving the gospel, and you know, a new creation walked away from that, that conversation. Hallelujah, Hallelujah, we’re running out here. Can you guys do a new another podcast with us? Whoa,
23:19
as long as anything with you. You had us at hello. Barry McGuire, we love you and Karen, y’all are amazing. And because we didn’t even get to get into the details of sharing with mechanics and talking, it’s kind of fun, because people are looking we’re entrepreneurs, okay? I mean, we’ve, we’ve, done some stuff, and we’ve generated some money. We have things, and there’s an awful lot of people that lust for what we have
23:48
and think that’s our success,
23:52
and don’t realize to us it’s meaningless, that’s right, except that we can use it for God, He gives us more. You know, he trusts us. If he could trust you with some things, he’d trust you with more things. And now he’s given us more than any of us had ever expected. But we’re using it for His glory. We’re using it to give us a better opportunity of a larger territory, to proclaim His name. Take it all away from us folks, our joy is the same.
24:22
I know
24:24
we talk about that in our next podcast. Okay, so come back and see us next time and for now, see you later.
